Google practical project

Finally, we reached the last weeks of this semester and we nearly finished all of our projects. One of the most useful projects which helped me as a student in most of my projects was Google Practical Project. This project made me one of the addict users of Google and you can say a professional user too. Firstly, I got rid of my old browser which was the Internet Explorer and I installed Google Chrome which is much easier and faster to use In addition to Google Chrome, I now also use the Gmail instead of the Hotmail. Moreover, I have now my own blog which is a link between me and my friends around the world; it is a way for me to reveal my ideas and thoughts.

I am now able to use many of Google applications and tools such as:

MIS Peer Teaching project…

Finally, we finished Peer Teaching project after working very hard for two weeks. This project requires each group in the class to choose any chapter from 5 to 10 and teach it to the students. We decided to do chapter 5 which is about (IT Infrastructure and Emerging Technologies) after reading the chapter and search more about the topic.

At the beginning we regretted choosing this chapter because we found it difficult for us to understand. After that, we had a meeting with our teacher and we explained to him our problem, he helped us a lot by explaining the chapter for us. We were relieved because we started to divide our work and search about the topics until the second meeting with our teacher to show him our plan for the lesson. We decided to take the student for a tour to data centre in the college so they can link the information that we presented for them to what they will see in this tour.

Parents meeting day…

On the 18th of November we had the parents meeting at 4:30-6:00 PM to discuss the International Study Tour. The purpose of this meeting was to increase the number of the students who will be going to Hong Kong and Singapore by convincing the families of those who are hesitating.

The meeting started after the arrival of the families and Dr.Haward into the meeting room. Dr.Haward started the meeting by welcoming all the guests and he talked about the big role that Dubai Women’s College graduates play in the UAE and he mentioned the name of the graduates that are holding big positions in the country. After that, two of my colleagues presented a PowerPoint that showed the International Study Tours of the previous years that have been done by the finance major in the college. Adding to that, they presented some of the interesting information about these two countries and the purpose of our trip. The parents showed a big interest in this trip and that was obvious from their questions about the preparations.

We really enjoyed our time because we got the opportunity to meet some of the family’s members of the student. I was the organizer for this meeting and I really liked this experience because it helped me to show the people some of my skills like organizing events and taking the responsibility and try my best to accomplish my duties.

The Fate of Gold...

last week I read an article in Arabian Business magazine that called  "For jewellers, gold loses its shine" which was very interesting. This is a summary of it and I also included my reflection about it...

In the Gulf traditional souqs, there are some habits that will never change throughout the years like bargaining, unlike the price of gold which change constantly. The price of gold rose up to $1,000 for the first time from one year and that happened because investors were looking to this kind of investment which is safe when the market isn’t stable.

Jewelers were upset because of several reasons; the first reason was the slow spending from customers in the time when the price of gold went up to 25% because of the high cost of gold. The second reason was due to the recession and it consequences on the tourists spending where we can notice a 50% fall in sales.

Since 2008, January had recorded massive fall in sales were it diminished by 70% as a result of the augment in prices and there was no festivals or events which boosted this fall. The demand continued to descend in the Middle East during the last three months of 2008. Moreover, performance of gold in the western market was under control in Hajj Season, while in the eastern market was feeble.

After the big crash in the world’s economy, investors recognized the fortune that gold still have which can be considered as the safest investment the investor could have. That enucleates the reason why do people keep purchasing gold even when the industry is not doing well. In addition, unpleasant reports regarding capital market will spread out in the time where gold is declining hoping them to retrieve soon. Market analysts anticipated that price of gold will not be stable in 2009.

The performance of dollar, economic enlargement and consumers require are some issues that have put the market under danger. One of the examples is India, which has been one of the biggest importing countries for gold and it have a huge consumption for gold, but since the crises occurred the demand and importing of gold had fall massively. In Dubai, gold dealers relieved because gold is still in the buying list of people.

As a finance student, I believe that people shouldn’t spend their money in risky investments like the real estate or buying stocks and bonds because the market condition is not stable at the moments. Purchasing gold will be my choice if I had to invest my money because it will keep it value even after years. From my studies and researches, I noticed that investors are always looking for the safest haven kinds of investment and that affects the prices of good. For instance, the increase in the price of any good (gold) will affect the demand of customers which will reduce.

Citibank...

Yesterday I went with my group to citibank ( Al-wasel branch) for an interview with one of the managers in their marketing department. The purpose for this interview was to find out about one of their financial services which is ( Citi Travel Pass MasterCard ). We prepared questions for each section that we want to ask about, for example about their competitors, pricing, distribution,....etc. The interview started at 11:00 AM, we went there and reached the bank on time. Their securities were very strict regarding letting us enter the marketing department, and we were not allowed to take photos for the branch inside. Secretly, we took some pictures for their advertisements and their offices because it is very important to have these pictures.

The interview went smoothly without any troubles; the manager answered all of our questions about the marketing mix. We got a lot of useful information from this interview; he was using marketing terms that we were familiar with. After that, we returned to the college at 1:00 PM and we had our lunch and then we took class with Mr. Philip. At home, I tried to manage my time between doing the MIS project and the Marketing Mix project so I can finish my work before the deadline.
